US Agents Fire Tear Gas at Migrants at Border With Mexico

US border agents fired tear gas at migrants on the US-Mexico border. Asylum seekers approaching the U.S. border from Mexico were hit with tear gas. According to witnesses other ‘non-lethal’ weapons may have been used.

San Diego’s Border Patrol office posted to twitter that the pedestrian crossings were closed at the San Ysidro port of entry.

Early Sunday morning Trump tweeted, “Would be very SMART if Mexico would stop the Caravans long before they get to our Southern Border.”

More than 5,000 migrants have been camping around a sports complex in Tijuana. Aid volunteers with the group, Pueblo Sin Fronteras, say the march to the border was done to make the plight of migrants more visible to the governments of Mexico and the US.

Many of the migrants making their way through Mexico in recent weeks hope to apply for asylum in the US, but agents at the San Ysidro entry point are processing less than 100 asylum petitions a day.

The mayor of Tijuana declared a humanitarian crisis in his city on Friday, saying the city is struggling to accommodate migrants.
