Censorship has gotten parliamentary approval in France. France’s parliament has passed a new law allowing judges to order the immediate removal of “fake news” in the run up before elections. Critics argue the law will jeopardize democracy and censor the press.
French parliament passed the law ahead of the upcoming European elections. The National Assembly adopted the law, pushed for by President Emmanuel Macron. It had been rejected by the Senate earlier in the year. The bill allows a candidate or a political party to go to a judge to have “false information” removed from social media during the three month period before any election.
Critics of the bill from all over the political spectrum say the bill could jeopardize freedom of information and freedom of the press, as a result, it will not be the best way to combat the spread of fake news.
