Germany: Tens of thousands marched in Berlin and Cologne on Saturday calling for the end of coal power in Germany. Organizers reported 16,000 protesters marched in Berlin and 20,000 people showed up to protest in Cologne. The demonstrations come ahead of the climate conference in Katowice, Poland beginning Monday.
Coal accounted for 40 percent of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide in 2017, the largest single source of the pollutant.
More than 40 percent of global coal power capacity is losing money. That will rise to more than 50 percent by 2030. The cost of emitting carbon dioxide is set to double in Europe and is projected to jump in China, as emissions trading markets are introduced.
