Five nuclear weapons protesters go to trial December 7th, charged with trespassing at a sprawling 122-acre nuclear weapons manufacturing complex, the Kansas City National Security Campus.
On Memorial Day the five crossed a purple line painted on a road leading to the plant’s entrance. Once they stepped over the line, they were immediately arrested by police and booked for breaking the law.
The plant is operated by Honeywell, it produces 85 percent of the non-nuclear components that go into the U.S. nuclear arsenal. It opened just three years ago, after its predecessor was contaminated by toxins and forced to shut down.
Nuclear disarmament has been too slow, progress was made in the 80s and 90s, but the movement has stalled.
Recently, the US has begun a process of updating its nuclear weapons. Favoring “tactical” nuclear weapons, in place of the old stockpiles. Experts warn that these weapons will blur the line between conventional and non-conventional weapons, and make moving the world into larger nuclear catastrophe much more likely.
Reasonable people who value the future of humanity worry these weapons will blur the line between conventional and non-conventional weapons, and will make their use more likely, moving the world into larger nuclear catastrophe.
