Workers are calling for union organizing at a new Amazon warehouse in New York. On Wednesday, a group of employees from the company’s warehouse in Staten Island announced plans to push for a union with organizers from the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union.
Union organizers see the $3 billion offered to bring an Amazon office campus to Long Island City as leverage to prevent Amazon from retaliating against workers trying to organize.
Workers said issues at the warehouse include: concerns for worker safety, inadequate pay, 12 hour work shifts with unreasonable hourly quotas, and workers aren’t paid for standing and waiting in long lines for required security checks.
