Cancer “Expert” for Scientific Journal Hid Ties to the Drug Industry

It has been exposed that a cancer expert had been receiving millions from drug industry. The 59-year-old José Baselga was pushed out as one of the editors-in-chief of the scientific journal Cancer Discovery. The American Association for Cancer Research controls Cancer Discovery and other journals.

An investigation by ProPublica and the NYT revealed that the doctor had failed to disclose relevant financial conflicts of interests in the majority of published research papers he had contributed to in the last five years.

The money added up to about $3.5 million in payments given to him by drug companies including Novartis, AstraZeneca, and Hoffmann-La Roche AG.

A study found that 85 of the top 100 doctors who received industry money in 2015 failed to disclose the payments in papers they had published the next year.
