Yellow vest protesters marched through Paris and other cities around France for an 8th consecutive Saturday. The demonstrations seemed to be re-energized after a lull during the holidays. A day after president Macron hardened his stance against the demonstrators police fired tear gas at protesters and chased them through the city.
For two months sparked by a regressive tax on the poor, people have been blocking roads, occupying highway toll-booths and staging street demonstrations in Paris and around France.
The government began the new year branding the protesters as agitators seeking to overthrow the government. On Wednesday, authorities arrested one of the movement’s most prominent figures.
Thousands of protesters peacefully marched through central Paris, before they were stopped and tear gassed by riot police. Protesters were turned around and followed through the city by riot police attacking them as they pieced together barricades to slow the cops pursuit.
Protesters waved banners, some reading “Macron, resign!” and “Abolish the privileges of the elite.”
