ExxonMobil’s appeal in a climate change lawsuit to block the release of records of its knowledge of how burning fossil fuels changes the climate has been denied. The Supreme Court issued a significant ruling around climate change by declining the oil giant ExxonMobil’s appeal.
A lawsuit was filed against the company alleging that Exxon violated consumer protection rules and misled investors about the impacts of fossil fuels on climate change and its business.
Last April, the highest court in Massachusetts decided Exxon would have to turn over internal documents covering what it knew about the impact of fossil fuel combustion on the climate.
Reports from InsideClimate News and the Los Angeles Times found that ExxonMobil’s scientists warned top executives that fossil fuels were warming the planet with research dating back forty years.
Despite internal research, ExxonMobil still sowed doubt over human’s impact on climate change through advertising campaigns, funding think tanks and institutions that denied the existence of climate change.
The New York Times sold ExxonMobil full page advertising space in 2000, casting doubts that climate change was occurring.
