A hunger strike started this week at a high security federal jail in Manhattan after family visits were cancelled. For two weeks in a row, family visits have been canceled due to shortages of prison guards at the facility.
Details of the hunger strike are scarce and reports of how many units it is impacting haven’t come out. The facility imprisons 800 people. One hunger strike participant said they are participating because of the importance of everyone having family visits.
Lawyers have been prevented from visiting clients at the facility. Lawyers for the prison emailed defense attorneys to notify them that they would not be able to visit with their clients because of the shortage of guards.
