People Prefer Marijuana Over Prescription Drugs

As states legalize marijuana, many more people will use marijuana instead of prescription drugs, researchers say.

The study found that 44 percent of medical marijuana users stopped taking a pharmaceutical drug or used less of one in favor of marijuana. The study was conducted to assess the use of medical marijuana and the mainstream health care systems.

People most frequently use medical marijuana to treat pain and depression. Nearly a third of the study’s participants said their doctor did not know that they used medical marijuana, indicating gaps between the two treatment systems.

The findings appear in the current issue of Journal of Psychoactive Drugs.
