Protesters and Riot Police Clash in Honduras

Thousands of people took the streets in the capital, Tegucigalpa, and across Honduras, demanding the resignation of President Juan Orlando Hernández. Anti-government demonstrations marked the first anniversary of the inauguration of Mr. Hernández, who assumed office on January 27th of 2014 and was re-elected in 2017. The opposition has accused Hernández of electoral fraud.

Police fired tear gas and brutalized protesters, many who are now calling for a national strike. Mr. Hernández ran for office after a ban on re-elections was controversially lifted by the Supreme Court.

Mr. Hernández, who is known by his initials, JOH, has denied that there were irregularities in the election. The opposition contested the electoral process and challenged the results, but they were upheld by the country’s electoral court.
