Canada’s Ambassador to China delivered a statement rejecting extradition of Huawei’s CFO, Meng Wanzhou, to the US and was subsequently fired by PM Trudeau.
John McCallum argued the US extradition request for Ms Meng was flawed. The next day he backtracked, issuing a statement saying he had “misspoke” and regretted his comments, but Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau still demanded the Ambassadors resignation.
Ms Meng is accused by the US of evading sanctions. Meng and Huawei deny the allegations. She was arrested on 1 December in Canada at the request of the US. She was granted $7.6 million bail, but is under 24 hour surveillance and has to wear an ankle monitor.
