Monsanto has been sued by thousands of farmers who say they developed cancers from using Roundup weedkiller.
Now Bayer AG, who owns Monsanto, is being sued for deceiving gardeners over Roundup’s impact on their gut bacteria and health.
In August, a court awarded $289 million in damages to Dewayne Lee Johnson, a school groundskeeper who said Roundup contributed to his terminal cancer.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court Wednesday, claims labels on products like Roundup’s Weed & Grass Killer told people falsely that they target an enzyme not found “in people or pets.”
But Roundup’s active ingredient glyphosate attacks an enzyme also found in the beneficial intestinal bacteria of humans and some animals, according to the lawsuit. Two other lawsuits, based on similar arguments, are ongoing in Wisconsin and Washington D.C.
