Hundreds Protest Against Spain’s King Felipe in Barcelona

Hundreds of people protested against a visit by Spain’s King Felipe VI to Barcelona. The king is loathed by many in Catalonia, particularly after his political intervention during Catalonia’s effort for independence, the present repression of the Catalan Independence movement and the imprisonment of Catalan leaders.

In honor of his visit, Catalans burned photographs of the King and blocked roads in downtown Barcelona.

Protesters carried banners saying “Stop Repression” and “Rotten Bourbons,” referring to the king’s incestuous royal house. Demonstrators threw eggs at police at a museum where the king held a dinner for the telecommunications industry.

The king’s presence in Barcelona comes as twelve Catalan Independence leaders are being imprisoned over the independence movement.
