Nasrin Sotoudeh, an Iranian human rights lawyer has been sentenced to 38 years in prison and 148 lashes, according to a post on Facebook from her husband Reza Khandan. The post on Monday did not specify what charges she faced, but said it was from two ‘open cases,’ one sentencing her to 5 years in prison, and the other 33 years and 148 lashes.
Sotoudeh has represented activists, including women prosecuted for removing their mandatory headscarf. Sotoudeh’s lawyer, Payam Derafshan, told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) in December that Sotoudeh had been arrested in June of 2018 and charged with insulting Iran’s supreme leader, spying and spreading propaganda.
Sotoudeh was jailed in 2010 and served about half of a six-year jail sentence for spreading propaganda and conspiring to harm state security, charges she has denied.
