In Possible Preparation for Military Invasion, US Withdrawing All Diplomatic Personnel From Venezuela

The US State Department has announced the withdrawal of all diplomatic personnel from Venezuela, citing the “deteriorating situation” and referring to the presence of US diplomatic personnel as a “constraint on US policy.” Some see the removal of the remaining diplomatic presence as a possible signal of impending military action in Venezuela.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the withdrawal Monday.

The U.S. will withdraw all remaining personnel from @usembassyve this week. This decision reflects the deteriorating situation in #Venezuela as well as the conclusion that the presence of U.S. diplomatic staff at the embassy has become a constraint on U.S. policy.

Earlier on Monday, President Nicolás Maduro announced two saboteurs had been captured while compromising the communications system of the Guri dam, Venezuela’s main power source. He blamed the US, calling it an “electrical criminal coup” and a “serious violation of human rights.”

The Trump administration, corrupt Republican and Democratic politicians, US corporate media, and European governments have been supporting the coup and calling for Maduro to step down as Venezuela’s President since January.
