According to documents made public Monday by the Electronic Privacy Information Center, the US government is scrambling to deploy Facial Recognition systems to monitor “100 percent of all international passengers,” in the top 20 US airports by 2021.
President Trump issued an executive order in March 2017, to deploy biometric verification systems to identify all travelers crossing US borders. The Obama administration initially signed it into law. The Trump administration has accelerated the deployment of biometric systems despite few, if any, legal safeguards.
The systems are already being used in seventeen international airports, including: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York City, San Jose, and Houston. Airport operations companies are also involved, including Los Angeles World Airports, Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, Mineta San Jose International Airport, Miami International Airport, and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, and major airlines Delta, JetBlue, British Airways, Lufthansa, and American Airlines.
