The death toll in Mozambique from Cyclone Idai could be as high as 1,000, said the president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, after he flew over some of the worst hit areas of the country. He described bodies floating in the rivers.
The official death toll in Mozambique stands at only 84 now following the flooding and high winds brought by the storm. The cyclone has killed people across southern Africa.
The storm made landfall near the city of Beira on Thursday with winds over 100 mph. By Sunday, aid was still unable to reach the city. Most of those confirmed to have died in Mozambique so far were around Beira, the fourth largest city in the Mozambique, with a population of about half a million people.
Witnesses say every building in Beira has been damaged and the streets are covered with fallen electrical lines.
In Zimbabwe, at least 98 people have died and more than 200 people are missing according to the government. Malawi was also hit, causing at least 122 deaths.
