A 40-year-old man died after being taken into Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody on Monday. He is the fourth person to die after being apprehended by CBP in recent months.
The CBP agency says the man died at the Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, after being arrested for illegal re-entry on Sunday. The agency says the man was diagnosed with flu-like symptoms, liver failure and renal failure.
The death follows three other immigrants who have died after being taken into CBP custody in recent months.
Two children, 7-year-old Jakelin Caal Maquin and 8-year-old Felipe Alonzo Gomez, died in CBP custody in December.
A 45-year-old man died in February after being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and congestive heart failure.
