Residents from one wealthy San Francisco neighborhood have used crowdfunding to raise $75,000 to help block the development of a new homeless shelter.
The money will fund a local lawyer, who made news in 2017 defending a landlord who more than tripled the rent on people, from $1,900 to $6,700.
A rival GoFundMe campaign, in support of the proposed shelter, was launched Thursday and quickly raised more than $100,000.
Wealthy residents want to block the development of a new temporary shelter because the proposed location is situated too close to neighborhoods filled with million-dollar homes.
The number of people who are homeless in San Francisco has remained constant, despite massive investments from the city to criminalize poverty and an ongoing effort to expel homeless people from the city.
