The US Department of Defense has awarded a contract to Avon Protection Systems for the production of nearly $250,000,000 worth of gas masks, specifically the M53A1 Chemical Biological Protective Mask systems, according to the Department of Defense website.
Based out of Cadillac, Michigan, Avon Protection Systems is a major manufacturer and supplier to the military and law enforcement agencies. The military expects the delivery to begin before September. The Army’s Contracting Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, is overseeing the order.
The M53A1 “provides excellent protection against traditional chemical and biological warfare agents, select Toxic Industrial Materials (TIMs) and particulate matter including radioactive dust,” reads the M53 brochure.
