White supremacists in the United States received training from a Ukrainian paramilitary neo-Nazi Battalion. The Ukrainian neo-Nazis were funded and trained by the US government, according to allegations in an FBI indictment.
The indictment asserts that members of a white supremacist group in the US had “violently attacked and assaulted counter-protestors” at several white nationalist and white supremacist events across the US. The individuals named in the indictment are alleged to have “used the Internet to coordinate combat training in preparation for the events” and then celebrated “their acts of violence in order to recruit members for future events.”
The indictment reveals that the founder of the US white supremacist group travelled to Germany, Ukraine, and Italy “to meet with members of European white supremacy extremist groups.”
One of these meetings was with a leader of a Ukrainian political party that was formed as an offshoot of the Ukranian neo-Nazi paramilitary Battalion. The affidavit details that the “Battalion is a paramilitary unit of the Ukrainian National Guard which is known for its association with neo-Nazi ideology and use of Nazi symbolism.” The statement adds that the Battalion “is believed to have participated in training and radicalizing United States-based white supremacy organizations.”
When cooperation between the US military and the neo-Nazi paramilitary forces became more well known, the Obama administration shut down efforts to limit funding arming and training the neo-Nazis. US assistance was only banned last year.
