According to Wikileaks, a high level source within the Ecuadorian government has said Julian Assange will be expelled within “hours to days” and an agreement with the UK for his arrest has already been coordinated.
WikiLeaks reports the move is an attempt by Ecuadorian President Lenín Moreno to cover up activities related to his use of an offshore tax haven created by his brother, known as The INA Papers offshore scandal.
On 26 March, WikiLeaks’ Twitter account announced that President Moreno is being investigated by Ecuador’s Congress for corruption, sparked by the INA Papers leak. The same tweet referenced President Moreno’s attempt to surrender Assange in exchange for US debt relief.
Assange faces charges, filed last year under seal in the US, and has been battling attempts by the Trump administration to extradite him to the US. He has lived in the Embassy since June 2012.
