At least 43 people were shot, seven fatally, in Chicago over the Memorial Day weekend, even as storms kept many people inside.
Memorial Day weekend is frequently a very violent time in the city of Chicago. Temperatures warm up, many people have a three-day weekend and are out and about for the first time of the season.
The number of people shot was slightly higher than last year’s Memorial Day weekend, when 39 people were shot, seven of them fatally. But much lower than 2016, when 71 people were shot, six fatally.
Much of the violence was concentrated in parts of the city’s South and West sides.
