Border Patrol is Buying Millions of Diapers

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is buying a massive amount of childcare supplies for a new internment camp in Donna, Texas. The tent camp complex will hold families and unaccompanied children seeking asylum in the US.

CBP is looking to buy 20,000 baby bottles, 3,000 boxes of baby wipes, and 2,224,000 baby diapers. The agency also needs 144,000 pairs of shower shoes. The agency is expecting so many young children that 36,000 of the shower shoes need to be size extra-small. The list of required supplies was released in a new solicitation, issued May 30 by CBP.

The $37 million internment camp funding is meant to give CBP “additional capacity to accommodate family units and UAC [unaccompanied children] arriving in surging numbers to the southwest border,” according to CBP’s contracting document.

“These facilities will provide temporary housing, meals, showers, clean clothing, and medical area for the family units and UACs.” The document describes the dimensions of the living space as “35 square feet per detainee of open space plus 12 square feet to account for sleeping mat space.”
