Trump Threatens Germany With Sanctions Over Russian Pipeline

“We’re looking at it,” Donald Trump said, referring to sanctions against Germany. The administration is considering sanctions as punishment for Angela Merkel’s support for a gas pipeline from Russia, Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday,

Echoing previous threats about German support for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, Trump said he’s looking at sanctions to block the project. The US hopes to export its own natural gas to Germany.

“We’re protecting Germany from Russia, and Russia is getting billions and billions of dollars in money from Germany” for its gas, Trump told reporters at the White House.

The US president has rebuked Merkel’s government over the pipeline deal.

Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said the US president’s comments were “nothing other than blackmail and a form of unfair competition.”
