Fireball From Philadelphia Refinery Explosion So Massive Satellites Pick It Up

An orange fireball lit up the sky in Philadelphia after an explosion at an oil refinery. The fireball was so massive a satellite from the National Weather Service picked it up early on Friday morning.

“The heat signature is so large and hot it could be detected using infrared imagery,” the NWS said in a tweet.

Multiple giant explosions ripped through the refinery, lighting up the sky and shaking homes in neighborhoods from Pennsylvania to New Jersey. Some people reported debris from the explosions raining down in the surrounding area.

Firefighters responded to a report of an explosion around 4 a.m. The Philadelphia Fire Department said only four minor injuries were reported.

The Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery complex includes two refineries, it is the largest oil refining complex on the Eastern Seaboard.
