The US government briefly published a document outlining the military’s nuclear war strategy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff website. The document is the first doctrine paper along these lines to be published in more than a decade.
The document, “Doctrine for Joint Nuclear Operations,” was removed quickly, but it was up long enough for people to take a peek and copy it. The document is available on the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) website.
The document details how nuclear weapons are “essential” to the US military’s operations.
The document describes how “the spectrum of nuclear warfare may range from tactical application, to limited regional use, to global employment by friendly forces and/or enemies,” and that, “Integration of nuclear weapons employment with conventional and special operations forces is essential to the success of any mission or operation.”
The document makes only three mentions of casualties.
