Cops are increasingly turning to genetic testing companies to track people down by not only exact matches, but by using a process called “genetic genealogy” to find near-matches for DNA. It only takes one person from your family to implicate everyone else in a police dragnet.
Genetic testing companies are amassing massive databases of people’s genomes from the public and those companies reserve the right to act unilaterally in sharing the data, and this sharing is effectively unregulated.
Even when the companies let people opt out of having their DNA used by cops, family members using genetic testing may not make the same decision, leaving the family’s genetic code exposed to law enforcement.
